This really isn't a bad book, but there are two other books that are much more up to date and suitable for undergrads: An Introduction to Linguistic Typology and Introducing Language Typology (Cambridge Introductions to Language and Linguistics). I've used the former as part of the reading material for a first year intro to linguistics class Cited by: The idea for this book arose in when I was coteaching a course titled “Grammar II” at the University of North Dakota.

That course was taught to a mixed class of undergraduate and graduate students and Introduction to typology book designed to cover the basics of typology, the basics of discourse, and the basics of Relational Grammar, all in the span of 10 weeks.

This was an excellent book - perfect as an introduction into the subject or for those will little background in contrastive linguistics/typology. The book was so accessible, easy to follow, well set-out, and above all, full of excellent examples.
